A timber home that we built in late 2014 was featured in a story by Lois Nicholls on JournoNews.
The task was to build a home almost entirely of Darwin stringy bark that was salvaged from proposed mine sites in Napranum, Cape York. Much of the timber came from trees that were about 200 years old. The nature of the timber made for tricky work, but perseverance and precision enabled us to build a house that showcases the qualities of the old wood.
Thanks to this extra care, we were also able to cut joints in a way that allowed them to join together perfectly, eliminating the need for steel plates and bolts.
We believe the end result is a truly beautiful home that fits in very well with the neighbourhood.
More importantly, though, this project is a testament to the importance of valuing our natural resources and the need for modern professionals to be flexible when they approach their work. Creative thinking and patience will always reveal a solution, no matter the problem faced.
